Teaching addition of doubles to kids

A double is a number that is made up of two identical digits. For example, 22, 44, and 66 are all doubles.

When we add doubles, we can use a trick to make the calculation easier. First, let’s look at an example:

If we want to add 22 + 44, we can start by adding the two 2’s together to get 4. Then, we can add the two 4’s together to get 8. Finally, we can put the 4 and the 8 together to get our final answer: 48.

We can use the same trick to add any two doubles together. Just add the two identical digits together, and then put the result in the tens and ones place of the final answer.

For example, let’s say we want to add 66 + 88. We can start by adding the two 6’s together to get 12. Then, we can add the two 8’s together to get 16. Finally, we can put the 1 and the 6 together to get our final answer: 154.

This trick works because when we add two identical digits together, the result is always double that number. For example, when we add two 2’s together, we get 4. When we add two 4’s together, we get 8. And so on.

Remember, when we add numbers, it’s important to line them up in columns, with the units digit (the ones place) at the bottom and the hundreds digit (the hundreds place) at the top. This will help us keep track of our place value and make sure we add the numbers correctly.

For example, if we have the numbers 122 and 244, we would line them up like this:

Then, we would start by adding the units digits (the ones place) together: 2 + 4 = 6. Since 6 is the units digit in 6, we write down the 6.

Next, we add the tens digits (the tens place) together: 2 + 4 = 6. Since 6 is the tens digit in 6, we write down the 6.

Finally, we add the hundreds digits (the hundreds place) together: 1 + 2 = 3. Since 3 is the thousands digit in 3, we write down the 3.

So the final total is 363.
