This quiz asks the child to add big numbers ideally a three digit number to a two digit number in this case. Here the student gets to learn about adding two numbers one having two places while the other having three places. This might also involve the cases of carrying forward the numbers as a result of adding number combinations such as five and six or six and four. Hence this math quiz helps the child to review their math skills in the area of additions and that too since bigger numbers are involved, they tend to learn little more related to additions.

Adding three digit to two digit number

Addition is an important mathematical operation that is used to find the sum of two or more numbers. In this lesson, we’ll be learning how to add a three-digit number and a two-digit number together.

A three-digit number is a number that has three digits, such as 123, 456, and 789. A two-digit number is a number that has only two digits, such as 12, 34, and 56. To add a three-digit number and a two-digit number together, we use a process called column addition.

Column addition is a method of adding numbers by aligning them in columns and adding them up one column at a time. Let’s look at an example to see how it works.

Example: Let’s say we want to add the numbers 123 and 45.

We’ll start by aligning the numbers in columns, with the ones digits, tens digits, and hundreds digits lined up.

  123
+ 45
-----

The first column is the ones digits column. We’ll start by adding the ones digits of the two numbers, which are 3 and 5. 3 + 5 = 8, so we write the 8 in the ones digit of the answer.

  123
+ 45
-----
 168

Next, we move on to the tens digits column. We add the tens digits of the two numbers, which are 2 and 4. 2 + 4 = 6, so we write the 6 in the tens digit of the answer.

  123
+ 45
-----
 168

Finally, since there is no carry over and the sum of ones and tens digit are less than 10 we just take the 1 from 123 as our answer

  123
+ 45
-----
 168

And there you have it! The sum of 123 and 45 is 168.

Another example:

Example: Let’s say we want to add the numbers 345 and 78

  345
+ 78
-----

We start adding the ones digit, in this case 5+8=13 so we write 3 in the ones digit of the answer and carry over the 1.

  345
+ 78
-----
   3

We move on to the tens digit, in this case 4+7+1=12 so we write 2 in the tens digit of the answer and carry over the 1

  345
+ 78
-----
  23

Finally we move on to the hundreds digits and add 3+1=4 so we write 4 as our answer

  345
+ 78
-----
 423

As you can see the process is the same as adding three digit to one digit numbers. The only difference is that we have to add the digits of the tens column as well.

It’s important to practice addition of three digit numbers and two digit numbers to become more proficient in math. Also if you are struggling with carrying over or if you are making mistakes it can be useful to go back and practice single digit addition and the concept of carrying over.

Don’t forget that when adding any two numbers together, the process of carrying over is necessary when the sum of any column is greater than 9. Make sure to line up the digits in columns and add them one column at a time. Keep practicing, and you’ll become an addition pro in no time!
